Are you needing art for a room in your home? Is it an open space on your wall where you want to display original art? Selecting and investing in art can be challenging. You want to invest in a piece that will remain timeless and that enhances your style and decor. Here are five ways to choose original art for your home.
1. Select art with meaning
Selecting art for your home should not be an overwhelming process. Sure, not everyone is connected to art trends and community, but that does not mean it should be a stressful experience. The first thing you should do when looking at art for your home or room is to make sure the piece of art has special meaning to you. Is the art a place you love to visit, does it highlight a favorite past time, or do you know the artist personally or through a mutual friend? Perhaps you even have some similarities with the artist’s life such as hometown, school, upbringing. Either way, your art should make you feel connected to it in some way.
2. Buy from local artists.
When people think of original art, they may think of masterpieces that are displayed in museums across the globe. If you have the budget to invest in a famous artist or his or her work then I am jealous! One way to find original art is to research local artists in your area. They can be emerging artists or an established local artist. You can visit start-up galleries in your area, craft and art fairs, or antique and décor stores. When you buy a piece of original art from a local artist you are not only supporting his or her livelihood but also your local community and small businesses.

3. Choose art that fits wall space in your room.
Before setting out and scouring tons of art make sure you measure the wall where you have space for art. Being prepared and looking for specific sizes can help narrow down your options. Perhaps you love a piece of work a local artist created but it does not work in your space. Talk with your artist and see if he or she is open to creating a custom piece in the size you need. Many times, artist paint custom or commissioned art. This allows you to form a working relationship with your artist and he or she can consult you on the ideal size and style to match your décor.
4. Consider your room's color scheme.
Know the colors that compliment your style and room. Make sure it blends with your existing décor. The last thing you want is to invest in art that does not match your décor. Write down all the colors in your room and take it with you when looking at original art in person. If you find a local artist who has an online gallery of their works then reach out and see if you can see their work in person. I personally bring my art to potential clients’ homes so we can evaluate the space that needs to be filled and if it blends with existing décor and your color scheme.
5. Consider lighting.
Light can be harsh on paintings and photography. If you have a lot of natural light in the room where your new art will be then making sure your artist has properly protected the artwork is crucial. Glazes with UV protective and antireflective glass will help protect your artwork from fading over time.
Always remember that there is no “right art” that you need to purchase. Trends should not play into your selection. You should always select a piece you love and not worry what others have in their homes. It is original art after all. And, as a local artist, please remember the talent living in your own community.
